The value of art is broadly uncorrelated to traditional financial markets. Instead, there is a myriad of factors from which art derives its value, such as:

Lenders offer different types of loans, but we can typically distinguish between a recourse loan and a non-recourse loan. Historically, lenders offer art loans on a recourse basis, but we are seeing a growing demand for non-recourse loans.
While the art serves as the primary collateral, the borrower must offer a personal guarantee of repayment. If the lender cannot recover the complete amount of the loan, the lender can make a claim on the borrower’s other assets.
The artwork is the sole collateral. If the borrower cannot repay the loan, the lender can take possession of the art but cannot pursue any of the borrower’s other assets.
The lender will first engage an art market specialist to administer an objective appraisal of the artwork. They will look into relating documentation such as ownership documents (bill of sale), its provenance, and identifying information (artist, title, medium, size etc.)
Once the lender and specialist put a value on the art, the lender will craft a loan agreement according to the client’s unique needs and requirements. It will outline critical terms such as Loan-to-Value ratio, typically around 40-50%, the loan tenure and the interest rate.
The loan will be negotiated and finalised, followed by a sign-off on the loan agreement.
